Start with what the traveller will do

Will the worker take a private holiday, accompany the family without working, or perform household duties during the stay? That distinction should be resolved before selecting an application category.

The Swiss UAE visa page links a dedicated tourist/household-employee checklist and warns that working without the relevant permit is prohibited. BLS Spain UAE also lists a separate household-worker route. Neither example means one generic “maid visa” works throughout Schengen.

Ask the destination specific questions

Give the official authority the planned dates, destination, employer relationship and actual duties. Ask whether work authorisation is needed, which checklist applies and what evidence is required from the employer.

A useful inquiry is concrete: “The employee is resident in the UAE and would accompany this household on these dates, performing these duties.” Do not disguise work as tourism to simplify paperwork.

Build separate files

As a practical preparation method, keep the worker’s identity and residence evidence separate from the employer’s travel and sponsorship evidence. Then cross-reference the shared itinerary.

Check who pays for flights, accommodation, insurance and daily expenses. Ensure that accommodation arrangements describe where the employee will actually stay, not merely the family’s booking.

Explain the application and travel plan to the person whose passport is used. They should know what is being submitted and retain access to their own documents and decisions. Do not circulate passport or bank records among unrelated appointment sellers.

Before departure

Check that the permission issued matches the planned activities. Read the dates, territory and entry allowance for each traveller; the employer’s visa or visa exemption is not the employee’s permission.

If the authority has not confirmed the required route, do not assume that accompanying a wealthy or visa-exempt sponsor resolves the issue. Get qualified advice and written clarification before paying for the journey.
