Common questions

Does EES apply to me if I already hold a Schengen visa?
Generally yes for eligible non-EU short-stay travellers, including Schengen short-stay visa holders. Exemptions apply, including qualifying residence permits and long-stay visas issued by countries operating EES. UAE residence alone does not provide that exemption.
Does EES replace the passport stamp?
For travellers covered by EES, electronic entry and exit records replace manual passport stamping. Keep your own travel records and respect both the 90/180 limit and any shorter stay allowed by your visa.
Does EES mean I need to do anything before I travel?
EES is a border-registration system, not a visa application or travel authorisation. Follow the official instructions for your crossing and allow time for registration, particularly on your first visit.

EES full operation Fully operational at all external border crossing points since 10 April 2026 Covers eligible non-EU short-stay travellers, including short-stay visa holders. Exemptions apply, including relevant long-stay visa and residence-permit situations. A UAE residence permit is not a Schengen residence permit. The 90/180 rule Short stays are limited to up to 90 days in any 180-day period This general limit does not override a shorter permitted stay or other restrictions on the individual visa. Use the official short-stay calculator linked by the Commission when checking travel dates. Verified 2026-08-30 · Mukesh European Commission — Applying for a Schengen visa
