Apply for the purpose of the visit
Being self-employed in Dubai does not by itself make a holiday a business trip. Choose the category matching what you intend to do in Europe. If you plan meetings, see the business-visit guide; if you plan paid activity or remote work from Europe, check permission for those activities separately.
A UAE freelance permit does not answer the destination’s work-permission question. This guide concerns evidence for a short visit, not permission to work there.
Organise business and personal evidence separately
Think of the application as answering different questions:
| Question | Practical preparation | | --- | --- | | What activity do you carry out? | Identify the correct permit, licence or ownership record | | Where does income come from? | Match genuine client payments to the explanation | | Who pays for the holiday? | Separate company funds from personal funds available for travel | | What connects you to the UAE? | Explain actual ongoing business and residence circumstances |
Contracts, invoices or an income summary may help explain your records where relevant. They are not universal substitutes for the documents requested by the consulate.
The Dutch tourism checklist specifically addresses self-employed applicants through business-permit or tax-return evidence and three months of bank statements. Do not import home-country tax documents into a UAE checklist without checking which applies.
Can I sign my own NOC?
There is no safe one-line answer for every country. The current Swiss UAE tourism checklist says company owners also need a company letter, but must not sign it themselves. It separately addresses self-employed applicants. Swiss checklist.
If you are a sole operator and cannot meet a stated signature requirement, ask the official centre or mission what it accepts. Do not invent a partner, use somebody else’s company stamp, or assume a self-declaration overrides the checklist.
For Germany, the UAE tourism checklist specifically requests a trade-licence copy for investors or partners. Check the complete German instructions for your circumstances.
Variable income is not a reason to alter statements
If receipts arrive irregularly, prepare a truthful explanation. For example, a client paying three invoices together is different from a monthly salary. Label it accurately and retain supporting records where relevant.
Do not move funds between accounts to manufacture income or describe gross company turnover as your personal salary. Explain genuine transfers without hiding the original source. Our financial-evidence guide helps organise this distinction.
If you have recently started freelancing, state the real start date. Ask how the destination wants a short trading history documented instead of pretending the business existed earlier.
Golden Visa or spouse-sponsored residence
Residence status and economic activity are separate. A Golden Visa holder may be employed, self-employed or neither; a spouse-sponsored resident may work. Describe both accurately.
Use the residence-validity guide for the document check and sponsored-applicant guide if someone else funds the journey.
Final consistency check
Compare the business name, licence holder, account holder and work description across your documents. Explain genuine differences rather than silently changing names. Confirm the requested translation and original/copy requirements before attending.
No licence type, invoice total or savings amount guarantees approval. The useful objective is a clear and truthful file that follows the correct checklist.
