Germany Schengen visa from the UAE

Short answer

For Germany applications from the UAE, use the German mission’s VFS routing for your residence jurisdiction. The German Consulate General in Dubai decides UAE applications. Prepare the correct purpose-specific checklist and do not use an outdated remonstration template after refusal.

Where UAE residents apply

The German mission’s Schengen page identifies Dubai as the deciding consulate for UAE applications, with submission through VFS in Dubai or Abu Dhabi according to residence. Confirm the centre before arranging time off work.

This differs from assuming that an Abu Dhabi resident’s file is necessarily decided by an embassy in Abu Dhabi.

Prepare the Germany-specific file

Start with the mission’s UAE tourism checklist if the trip is tourism. Select another checklist when the purpose differs. Read its residence, insurance and employer requirements rather than substituting a generic Schengen document list.

For practical preparation, make a comparison sheet showing your application dates, leave dates, accommodation and passport details. Investigate differences before submission. Do not change the real purpose just to use a simpler checklist.

Business trips and mixed itineraries

If you have meetings in Germany and sightseeing elsewhere, document the actual main purpose and itinerary. Use which consulate as a planning aid, then clarify a genuinely ambiguous itinerary with the authority.

Do not apply to Germany only because an appointment appears sooner.

Budget and timing

Allow time for passport return as well as the appointment and decision.

Important refusal update

Germany abolished the visa remonstration procedure worldwide from 1 July 2025. Its notice preserves the possibility of judicial review and a new application. Federal Foreign Office announcement.

Do not send an old free-remonstration template and assume you have protected a deadline. Follow the remedy instructions on your actual decision and obtain qualified advice promptly where a court challenge is being considered.

Prepare the German file for your household

Germany’s UAE checklist specifically distinguishes dependants, investors/partners and minors. Do not let a generic employee template stand in for your real circumstances. Use the sponsored-applicant, self-employed and children’s guides to organise questions before submission.

As an editorial preparation check, compare the documents for every traveller: identity, residence, requested trip, actual payer and any requested consent. Sharing accommodation does not mean sharing a single application.

Passport availability during processing

The published German UAE tourism instructions say the passport remains with the consulate during processing, and withdrawal through the stated procedure cancels or withdraws the application. Official checklist.

If you have another journey, ask about this before submission. Do not assume a passport-retention product offered for another country is available for Germany.

When an appointment is unavailable

Use the official Germany-UAE booking route and follow any current waitlist instructions. The appointment guide explains the distinction between joining a queue, receiving a slot and submitting an application. Do not choose a different destination on paper solely to avoid the wait.
