Draw the complete route first

Write every airport in order, including any change of airport, baggage collection and overnight stop. “Transit in Europe” is too broad to determine which permission is needed.

An airport-transit visa concerns remaining in the international transit area. It does not authorise entry into the Schengen area. A journey requiring a border crossing must be assessed separately.

Questions to ask the airline and airport

  • Is the connection genuinely airside?
  • Are bags checked through to the final destination?
  • Must you collect baggage or check in again landside?
  • Is an airport change involved?
  • Does the transit area remain accessible overnight?
  • Is there another Schengen airport later in the itinerary?

Use written itinerary details when checking official visa guidance. A ticket sold as a connection is not itself proof that you can make it without entering the country.

France: why nationality matters

France’s published airport-transit list includes Pakistani and Bangladeshi nationals and also includes ordinary Philippine passport holders subject to listed exceptions. Exemptions depend on the exact qualifying document and circumstances. Do not assume an Emirates ID supplies an exemption.

This is a France example, not a substitute for checking Germany, the Netherlands or another transit country. The requirements can differ.

Two Schengen airports change the analysis

A Dubai–Paris–Amsterdam–non-Schengen itinerary involves more than a single international-airside stop. France’s guidance distinguishes such journeys from airport-only transit. Check the short-stay entry requirements before buying that route.

An overnight connection is not automatically the same as entering the country: the actual terminal arrangements matter.

Keep evidence accessible

Carry the onward booking and the documents allowing entry to your final destination. If you rely on a visa or residence-permit exemption, verify its exact category and validity against the official list.

For a connection that becomes a planned visit, use the appropriate visa-type guidance rather than trying to stretch airport-transit permission into a holiday.
