Common questions
Is a Schengen visa one visa for all the countries?
A uniform short-stay visa is issued by one member state and is generally valid across the whole Schengen area. But the state that issues it is not your choice — it is determined by your main destination, and it applies its own evidence standards. That is why this site is organised by destination first.
Does the Schengen area mean the same thing as the EU?
No, and the difference costs people trips. Four Schengen states are not in the EU, and two EU members are not in the Schengen area — a Schengen visa does not admit you to those. The destinations section lists which is which.
I live in the UAE. Can I apply here rather than in my home country?
Generally yes, if you hold valid UAE residence — that is the normal route for expatriates in the Gulf, and it is usually the better one because your ties, employment and financial history are all here. The requirements differ from applying at home, which is what the applying-from-the-UAE section covers.
How far ahead should I apply?
Earlier than most guidance suggests, because from the Gulf the binding constraint is usually appointment availability rather than processing time. Consulates publish both a maximum lead time and a recommended minimum — check the one handling your destination before you book anything non-refundable.
