Start with nationality, residence and purpose

Visa need depends on nationality and applicable exemptions; living in the UAE is not the same as holding an Emirati passport. This guide concerns short visits, not permission to relocate or take employment. The usual short-stay limit is 90 days in any 180-day period. See the European Commission’s overview and exemption links.

Applications normally belong in the consular jurisdiction where you legally reside. A legally present non-resident needs justification for applying there; a UAE visit visa is not interchangeable with UAE residence. Visa Code, Article 6.

Passport and insurance checks

For an ordinary application, your passport must have two blank pages, have been issued within the previous ten years, and remain valid for at least three months after intended departure from Schengen. Travel medical insurance normally needs at least €30,000 cover, valid across Schengen for the intended stay, including emergency treatment and medical repatriation/death-related expenses. Multiple-entry applications require cover for the first trip and insurance for subsequent visits. Visa Code, Articles 12 and 15.

Practical check: compare the dates on your passport, residence document and insurance certificate side by side. They are different documents with different purposes; satisfying one does not establish that the others are acceptable.

What evidence should you prepare?

The common evidence categories include a signed application, photograph, accommodation, trip purpose, sufficient funds and evidence of intended return. Biometrics and further documents may be required. Apply no earlier than six months before travel and normally at least 15 days before departure; processing can extend from the usual 15 days to 45. Appointment availability adds a separate planning constraint. European Commission application guidance.

Do not treat this overview as your submission checklist. For France, the official application process provides a personalised list based on your circumstances. Select UAE as your place of residence and enter your actual nationality and trip purpose. France-Visas process.

UAE residence validity and bank statements

Before booking, find the residence-permit validity wording in your destination’s current UAE checklist. If renewal is pending or the wording is unclear, ask the official application centre or consulate before paying. This page does not establish a universal three- or six-month residence-validity rule.

Likewise, do not plan around an unsourced “minimum UAE salary” or a single bank-balance number. Ask which statement period, sponsorship evidence and document format apply to your situation. Keep a copy of the checklist you used and record when you checked it.

For a destination-specific starting point, see our France application guide. It separates France’s published daily subsistence references from an application bank-balance guarantee.
