Check more than the expiry date
The Dutch tourism checklist states the familiar passport checks: age of the document, at least two empty visa pages, a signature and validity extending at least three months after leaving Schengen. Review your destination’s own instructions too.
A passport can be unexpired but still fail another requirement. Look at the original issue date, not just a later extension stamp. Do not assume that blank observation pages are interchangeable with visa pages.
Use your last Schengen departure
For preparation, write the planned date of leaving the Schengen area on your checklist. Compare it with your passport expiry. If you will also visit another country, check that country’s entry rules separately; passing the Schengen test does not certify the entire itinerary.
Keep the passport check separate from your UAE residence-permit check. They establish different things.
Renewing before an application
If renewal is needed, consider completing it before entering the passport number into forms and buying passport-linked services. After renewal, review the application, insurance and bookings for outdated details.
Retain evidence connecting the old and new passports where relevant. Never alter a visa sticker or remove it from the old document.
A valid visa in an expired passport
The Netherlands’ sticker guidance says travellers in this situation should carry the new passport together with the expired passport containing the legible, undamaged visa. Confirm the position with your issuing authority and carrier if personal details have changed or the old passport was cancelled or damaged.
Practical inspection
Check the photo page, signature and physical condition in good light. If a page is torn or water-damaged, ask the passport authority and destination before relying on it.
Finally, read the visa after collection. A correct passport cannot cure an incorrect visa validity period, passport number or entry allowance.
